About Soma Streat Food Park
Based in San Francisco, the SoMa StrEat Food Park is culinary creativity and the independent spirit at its best. The venue features a rotating lineup of food trucks, as well as beer, wine, TV screens, carnival games, wifi, and heat lamps for those cold San Francisco nights. Friends, families and even pets are invited to explore their culinary carnival.
Since 2015, the SoMa StrEat Food Park has been working with Wonolo to staff larger scale events at its vibrant space.
Jobs they love to request
Prior to using Wonolo, the SoMa StrEat Food Park team faced a shortage of labor when hosting its events, which were time- and labor-intensive. They frequently were relying on informal networks of friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, and family. However, the team realized that this approach was time-consuming and not a reliable long-term solution for event staffing.
They had reached a point where they were running out of people to contact and sometimes found themselves with events without sufficient staff.
Food and beverage is a big industry in San Francisco, and it’s hard to find the right people.
The Root Cause
This event staffing conundrum came down to a central challenge – the SoMa StrEat Food Park would need people for a day, a couple of hours, or even an hour, but it was difficult to find reliable, part-time labor available for these short windows of time.
As Reilly Brock, Special Events and Public Relations Coordinator at the SoMa StrEat Food Park, shared regarding one instance, “We needed someone to serve Dungeness crab for 3 hours, but it’s hard to find someone like that in a job post.”
Was in need of
With their annual crab feast, one of their biggest and most expensive events, on the horizon and staffing up in the air, SoMa StrEat Food Park turned to Wonolo to find reliable servers.
In terms of execution, all-you-can-eat events can be quite complicated. There are challenges with not having enough hands to do the work and ensuring that there’s a streamlined assembly line. To do it right, the SoMa StrEat Food Park felt that they needed more hands.
avg. fill time for jobs
Reilly shared, “I was amazed that within seconds, we had people willing to do these jobs. We try to be proactive, but I could have posted these jobs day of and would have had qualified people.”
The experience of using Wonolo to staff the event was highly customizable. For example, the team was able to message Wonoloers with job specifics, such as to wear a certain type of clothing.
The experience was extremely straightforward from the first time. The agility and flexibility of Wonolo keep us coming back. It’s reliable and scales for the type of needs that we have.
and time spent on finding staffing
In addition, it provided a great venue for briefing Wonoloers with talking points in advance of the event.
Given concerns around the quality of crab from the recent crab season, this was key, as they were able to provide a statement about the crab for Wonoloers to share, should questions arise.
Since the crab feast, the events that the team has used Wonolo for run the gamut, from Digital Detox, a progressive adult summer camp, to an analog date night. The analog date night was a particularly memorable occasion for one Wonoloer.
Reilly commented, “It was a quirky type of event, and the Wonoloer we had on-site really fit in. Part of the experience was coming up with a weird nickname, which he was totally into.”
Working with Wonolo for the SoMa StrEat Food Park’s staffing needs has been huge in terms of saving time and reducing stress. Reilly elaborated, “It takes 5-15 minutes for finding staff versus hours… or even days. There are no guarantees when it comes to friends or family being available to work, so the Wonolo experience is a lot more efficient for something that doesn’t need to be overthought.”
Wonolo has been there every step of the way to help ensure that the SoMa StrEat Food Park team has a smooth experience. “Customer service has been great and responsive. It’s good to not be sent to a machine. Instead, you can interact with a human immediately. It’s very reassuring,” noted Reilly.
Wonolo cuts down on the time and employee cost of finding staffing to 25% of what it used to be.
Looking ahead, the SoMa StrEat Food Park has quite a number of initiatives on the horizon, including the opening of a new park in April 2016 in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco, along with a number of other events.
Whether it’s corn dogs, comfort food, or nachos and chili, Wonolo is a trusted source of labor for the team’s events to save them time and effort in staffing.
